Whether you are after a rare whisky in Australia for a special occasion or are looking for a collector’s item as a long-term investment, how do you know which whiskies are rare? Three factors make whisky more valuable: rarity, quality and age. With each passing year, more bottles get opened, lost or damaged, turning that particular whisky into a sought-after commodity you will be glad to have gotten your hands on.
If you are confused about the difference between single malt and single grain whisky, you are not the first. For both terms, the ‘single’ doesn’t apply to the word that follows; it purely means that the whisky is the product of a single distillery. In the case of ‘single malt’, the fact that malt is specified in the name means that those whiskies need to be produced from malted barley. On the other hand, ‘single grain’ allows for any ‘grain’ to be used, such as wheat, corn or rye, malted or unmalted. Blended whisky is a combination of whiskies used and blended Scotch, is a blend of single malts, from multiple distilleries with a portion of grain whisky.
From our most popular to our rarest whiskies, there is only one way to enjoy the world’s finest dram, and that is with all your senses. Start by looking at its colour and the lines it leaves on the glass when you swirl it, indicative of its age. Sniff it gently to take in all the aromas. Savouring the moment, take your first sip. Hold it on your tongue and let its flavour expand in your mouth.
